why we built viberater

·viberater

you've done this before.

it's 9pm on a friday. you're in the cab, or on the train, or already standing on the corner. you pull up a place on google. 4.6 stars. 1,200 reviews. somebody loved the burrata in 2023. somebody else had a bad waiter in 2022. somebody's mom's birthday went great in 2024.

none of that tells you what you actually want to know.

is it dead in there right now? is it packed and you'll wait 40 minutes for a drink? is it a date-night room or an after-work room? is anyone your age inside, or did you just walk into the wrong scene?

the star rating can't answer any of that. it was never built to.

the gap

reviews tell you about the place. they don't tell you about the room.

a great bar can be dead on a tuesday. a mediocre bar can be electric on a saturday. the same restaurant can feel romantic at 7pm and rowdy at 11pm. the food doesn't change. the vibe does. and the vibe is what you're actually deciding on when you pick where to go.

we kept noticing this gap. we'd text three friends before going anywhere new. "you been? what's it like? is it dead?" the group chat became the review system because the actual review system wasn't answering the question.

so we built the app the group chat already wanted to be.

what a vibe actually is

we spent a long time on this. a vibe isn't a number. it isn't five stars. it isn't "good" or "bad."

we landed on three layers.

energy is the temperature of the room. dead, chill, buzzing, packed, electric. one word. the first thing you'd tell a friend who asked.

the crowd is who's there. locals, tourists, after work, date night, groups, solo friendly. you pick a few that fit.

the mood and the scene is everything else. cozy, dimly lit, dive, rooftop, dancy, gritty, main character. the texture of the place.

a vibe is one energy plus a few tags. that's it. takes about ten seconds to drop. and because it takes ten seconds, people will actually do it.

why ratings don't decay and vibes do

a star review from 2022 is still on the page in 2026. that's how every review platform works. the past sits on top of the present forever.

a vibe expires. the weight of every vibe drops to zero over six hours. a vibe dropped at 8pm tells you a lot at 9pm and almost nothing at 2am. by tomorrow it's gone from the "right now" view entirely.

this is the whole point. you're not trying to know what the place was like in general. you're trying to know what it's like right now. so the data has to be right now too.

over time, patterns emerge. tuesdays at the rusty nail are usually chill and cozy. saturdays are usually packed and dancy. those patterns live in the app too, but separately from the live signal. the live signal is the live signal.

why we don't have dms

we get this question a lot. you can wave at someone you see at the same place. they can wave back. you both get a notification. that's it. no chat. no profile messages. no slide-into-the-dms.

this is on purpose and it's permanent. the whole point of viberater is to push you toward going outside, not toward another inbox. if two people want to talk, they can talk in person. they're already in the same room.

we'd rather be useful for ten minutes a night than addictive for two hours.

why we started in nyc and long island

because we live here. because the density makes it work. because if a real-time vibe app can't survive a friday night in brooklyn, it can't survive anywhere.

what we're not

we're not a feed. we're not a social network. we're not yelp. we're not a place to build a following or post pictures of your dinner.

we're a tool. you open it before you go out. it tells you what's happening. you go to the place that fits the night you want. you close the app.

the best version of viberater is one you barely think about. it just answers the question.

what's next

we're launching in nyc and long island. the app is in testflight now. waitlist is open at getviberater.co.

if you've ever stood outside a bar checking your phone, or walked in and walked right back out, this is for you.

know the vibe before you come inside.
